Difference in 10-30 vs 10-40 oil weights?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When you see a W on a viscosity rating it means that this oil viscosity has been tested at a Colder temperature. The numbers without the W are all tested at 210° F which is considered an approximation of engine operating temperature. In other words, a SAE 30 motor oil is the same viscosity as a 10w-30 or 5W-30 at 210°. The difference is when the viscosity is tested at a much colder temperature. For example, a 10W-30 motor oil performs like a SAE 10 motor oil would perform at the cold temperature specified, but still has the SAE 30 viscosity at 210° F which is engine operating temperature. This allows the engine to get quick oil flow when it is started cold verses dry running until lubricant either warms up sufficiently or is finally forced through the engine oil system. The advantages of a low W viscosity number is obvious. The quicker the oil flows cold, the less dry running. Less dry running means much less engine wear. A 10w40 oil has a higher weight at 210* than a 10w30 oil. Obviously the use of a 10w40 in a modern engine would be foolish. Modern engines are built to much closer tolerances than engines of a decade ago. 10w40 does not flow as well at 210*, this causing engine wear.

Why does the engine temperature go down when driving in the winter?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It could be a stuck open thermostat that not allowing the temp to get up to normal operating temp be sure to check the raditor cap Maybe I am tired or just missing something, but if it is cold, and your moving, it raises the wind chill factor up. Or more cold air is hitting the radiator and cooling it down. It makes sense. thats common sense..something hot meets something cold, it cools down.. e.g. hot water in snow.. an ice pop in the sun.. If the thermostat is working properly, the temperature of the water in the engine block will rise only to the rating of the thermostat. Once the coolant water goes to the heater core or radiator, the cold air will be very efficient in removing heat from the coolant. If there is no antifreeze in the coolant, water can freeze in the radiator, blocking proper flow and causing the engine to overheat.

How does a key fob work?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

On a fob, there are multiple buttons, one of those buttons unlocks the car. Another one of them locks the car. One of the buttons pops the trunk and the last button turns on or off the alarm. On more advanced models the radio frequency fob can also be used to open the trunk or even remotely start the vehicle. My current one allows me to lock, unlock, remote start, open back hatch, open back window and alarm.
