Is Hurling better than Gaelic Football?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hurling and Gaelic Football are two different sports. It can be hard to compare them. Hurling is the fastest field game in the world, the course of a game can change quickly as a team trailing can come back into contention very quickly and a very good match is something special to witness. Gaelic Football is also special though and you can get very good matches in that too. Hurling is more unique, making it that bit extra special. Some people prefer Hurling and others prefer Gaelic Football. So it is really down to the individual to decide. Most fans watch both sports, even if they have a preference for one.

Did Gaelic football come from soccer?

Gaelic football has seen various rule changes since the GAA was founded in 1884. Included would be the amount of players being progressively reduced to 15; changes in the scoring system; removal of the outer posts that are still part of Australian Rules Football; Changes in the length of matches; Changes in how frees are taken; Changes in the types of fouls; Changes in how the ball is passed; Changes in the competitions;

All of these an many other rules have changed. The style and nature of the game has also changed, as have tactics. What would have been called the "Catch and kick" style of play has moved to more passing. In recent years we saw the emergence of the so-called blanket defence. The way teams train and prepare for matches has changed, with a much more committed attitude to fitness coming in. So there are a lot of changes in the game.

What does Gaelic football crest mean?

The Red Hand of Ulster is synonymous with Ulster. It comes from the legend of Dermot and O'Neill and their race for Ulster. After a long horse race they reached a river. Dermot led. It had been agreed that the winner would be the one whose hand first touched Ulster. Dermot brought his horse into the river and began swimming to the other side. O'Neill stopped at the riverbank, cut off his right hand. It fell, drenched in blood. He then picked it up and threw it across the river. It touched the other side before Dermot's did. That is the origin of the Red Hand of Ulster.

The Castle and Round Tower were symbols of Ancient Celtic and Irish tradition in County Antrim.

What is the difference between Gaelic football and rugby?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Gaelic Football and Australian Rules Football are similar in many ways, but also different in many ways. Some of the most obvious differences are as follows: Gaelic Football is played with a round ball whereas Australian Rules Football is played with an oval shaped ball. Gaelic Football is played on a rectangular shaped pitch, whereas Australian Rules Football is played on an oval-shaped pitch. There is no goalkeeper in Australian Rules Football. The scoring system and the structure of the goals are different. Australian Rules footballers are professional, while Gaelic Football is an amateur sport.

Tackling rules are different with Australian Rules Football having higher contact levels.

However, there are also similarities in the games. Look at YouTube features many videos for both games. This set of 3 videos give a good overview of Gaelic Football: http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=iIlsRsMMJUc
