How many games are in a hurling season?

User Avatar

Asked by Sammy6666

That is not a simple question to answer for lots of reasons. Hurling is played all year round, so there are many competitions. Many players can be playing for several teams. They may play for their local team and also be good enough to be chosen for the county team and even the provincial team. They could also be playing in different age grades. Minor is for under 18s. Senior is for anyone of 18 or over. There is also a grade for under 21. So a person who is 19 could be playing on both a senior team and an under 21 team. There are also other grades, like school and college teams and levels of ability. So for many players, there could be a lot of matches in their season.

When it comes to particular teams there are also differences. There are many competitions that teams play in. The structure of some competitions also mean that teams in the same competition that meet in the later stages could have played in a different amount of matches. A league typically has about 7 matches, but some teams may progress and play in a few additional matches. Some cup competitions allow a second chance for some teams, which leads them to playing extra matches.

So when you put all of these things together, it is not easy to say how many matches are in a season for an individual player or an individual team.

What Other Materials can be used to make Hurleys?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In theory you could make a hurley out of any wood. However proper hurleys are made from the wood of the ash tree, due to its strength and pliability, which is very important fo the nature of the sport of Hurling, which is different to other stick and ball games. There was an effort to make plastic hurleys in the 1980s, but they weren't suitable and the idea did not last long.

What do you need to play camogie?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Not much equipment is needed. Players just need boots, socks, shorts and a shirt. Some players, mainly goalkeepers, will wear gloves to get a better grip on the ball. The only mandatory safety equipment is a gum shield. Other than that, you just need a ball and a place to play. Ideally, it would be a proper Gaelic Football pitch with lines and goals, but like any ball sport it can be played anywhere, like in a garden or a park or a beach.

What is a hurling stick made from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

w.This will depend on the nature of the break. One option is to get a car windscreen adhesive and put it in the break, this is the normal glue you would find in breaks. Bands can be found on building sits or you can buy a roll on the net, but they are usually pricey A broken hurley can be held together with a metal strip. However this is not always advisable as the strip can become detached and be a danger in itself. Even with a strip, the hurley may still get further damage. It is better to replace a damaged hurley. Or you can get it repaired by someone who knows what their doing and will fill the crack with proper glue for hurley cracks and put bands across the boss to strengthen the crack. Most hurleys get stronger after being repaired properly and it is very rare that it would break in the same spot. But if a hurley is not repaired properly it will not be as good as it once was. And with a new hurley costing 25 euro and a repair only 5 euro. Clubs spend 100s of euro on hurleys every year.

Who is the best hurling player in the world?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I have seen all the great hurlers of the last 25 years and in my opinion, the greatest of them all was D.J Carey...No one had his multitude of skills.Considering how up close and personal some defenders got with him, to do what he did on the hurling field was a huge achievement. He was easily the best finisher the game has ever seen. I happened to be present at a championship game (I was supporting the opposition!) where he gave the greatest individual performance I have ever seen... He had everything...Pace, anticipation and despite what some might say; he was a hardy so-and-so! Consider these men...Brian Whelahan, Sean McMahon, Brian Lohan, Liam Dunne, Brian Corcoran for one second! These are all time greats of the game...Did Christy Ring ever play against that standard of player...I very much doubt it...

He was playing in the most competitive championship that (sadly) ever was...When will Offaly have a better team...My own county Galway, had fine teams during Carey's playing days but they couldn't bring home the silverware. All I hear from people (especially Cork people) when I mention him as the best ever is he never did it in a final...That is frankly wrong! So...he failed to score in the 99' All-Ireland final... Virtually every forward that day had poor games...Seanie McGrath had a great match...Does that make him an all time great! Damien Quigley had a stormer in the 94' final...He did very little after that! Nicky English had one great final and he was playing Antrim in 1989...That is no disrespect to English...He was one classy performer...Just that a career can not be defined by a performances in a final.

Looking back at the best defense that Carey would of had to face during his playing days, I think of the Clare team from 95-99...They had one of the best keepers that has ever played the game and 6 great defenders...Carey got only 2 chances to score goals against them in championship games...He scored both of them. Considering the circumstances, his goal in 1997 was the greatest I've ever seen... D.J Carey is an all time great and if Christy Ring and Mick Mackey were better, then they must have been some players...We'll never know but those who continue to argue so vociferously that Ring was the best ever- never actually saw him play...Now work than one out!
